The Complete Istanbul & Turkey Heritage Journey — Overview
There is a particular way that Istanbul reveals itself: not all at once, but layer by layer, the way a city built on two continents and three empires should. The History Travel Agency has spent nearly two decades guiding travelers through those layers — from the candle-lit hush of the Basilica Cistern to the call to prayer echoing between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, from the bartering theatre of the Grand Bazaar to the wind-carved fairy chimneys of Cappadocia and the marble avenues of Ephesus. This is not a bus tour with a script. It is a private, historian-led journey through the places that made Istanbul — and Turkey — one of the most layered destinations on earth.
Founded in 2007 by two Istanbul-born tour guides, The History Travel Agency was built on a simple idea: mass tourism flattens a place, and a good guide brings it back to life. Every itinerary we run — whether a half-day Istanbul walking tour or the full 8-day Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus journey featured on this page — is planned around your interests, your pace, and your travel dates, not a fixed departure calendar.
This signature 8-day Istanbul & Turkey Heritage Journey is our most requested itinerary, and for good reason: it compresses the very best of Byzantine, Ottoman, Seljuk, Greco-Roman and Cappadocian heritage into one seamless, professionally guided week. You will walk the Hippodrome where chariots once raced, stand beneath the dome that inspired Ottoman architecture for 500 years, watch dawn break over hundreds of hot air balloons, and trace the marble streets where St. Paul once preached — all without lifting a finger to arrange transport, tickets, or hotels.
Every guide on our team is a TÜRSAB-licensed professional with a genuine academic interest in Ottoman, Byzantine and Anatolian history — not a driver reading from a script. That is the difference travelers consistently mention in our reviews, and it is the difference we build every itinerary around.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Below is the full day-by-day structure of our signature 8-day journey. Every day can be lengthened, shortened, or re-ordered for private departures — this is the itinerary as most travelers run it.
A private driver meets you at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) and transfers you to your hotel in Sultanahmet, the old walled city. After time to rest, your guide joins you for an easy evening orientation walk along the Hippodrome and the waterfront, with dinner recommendations tailored to your tastes.

Sultanahmet by Night
Floodlit against the sky, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia face each other across a square that has been the political and religious heart of two empires for over a millennium — the perfect first impression of the days ahead.
A full day inside Istanbul's UNESCO-listed historic peninsula, walkable on foot and led entirely by your private guide.

Hagia Sophia
Built in 537 AD as the greatest cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, converted to a mosque in 1453, a museum in 1935, and a mosque again in 2020, Hagia Sophia is arguably the single most historically layered building on earth. Its dome — 55 meters high with no interior columns — was an engineering marvel that architects would try to replicate for the next thousand years.

The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)
Named for the 20,000 handmade İznik tiles lining its interior, this early 17th-century mosque was built to rival Hagia Sophia directly across the square. Its six minarets caused controversy at the time — only the mosque in Mecca had that many.

Hippodrome of Constantinople
Once a 100,000-seat chariot-racing stadium at the center of Byzantine public life, today an open square holding the 3,500-year-old Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column brought from Delphi, and the German Fountain.

Basilica Cistern
An underground reservoir built in 532 AD, held up by 336 marble columns — several recycled from earlier temples, including two resting on carved Medusa heads. Atmospheric, cool, and one of the most photographed sites in the city.
From the seat of Ottoman power to the commercial heart of the empire, day three covers 500 years of imperial life.

Topkapı Palace
Home to Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years, Topkapı's courtyards hold the Imperial Harem, the Treasury (with the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond), and relics attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. Few palaces anywhere reveal court life in such intimate detail.

Süleymaniye Mosque
Designed by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan for Süleyman the Magnificent, this hilltop mosque complex offers one of the best panoramic views over the Golden Horn — and a quieter, equally magnificent alternative to the Blue Mosque.

Grand Bazaar
One of the world's oldest and largest covered markets, open since 1461, with over 4,000 shops across 61 covered streets selling carpets, ceramics, gold and spices. Your guide will help you navigate — and negotiate — like a local.

Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar)
Built in 1664, a smaller, fragrant sibling to the Grand Bazaar, still selling Turkish delight, saffron, and spices under its original vaulted ceiling.
A day that moves between the grandest and most intimate sides of Istanbul: an imperial European-style palace, a private boat on the water that divides two continents, and the pastel streets of the old Jewish and Greek quarters.

Dolmabahçe Palace
Built in the 1850s when the Ottomans wanted a European-style seat of power, Dolmabahçe replaced Topkapı as the empire's political center and was later the residence of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who passed away here in 1938.

Private Bosphorus Cruise
A private boat carries you between the European and Asian shores, past Ottoman waterfront mansions (yalıs), Rumeli Fortress, and the bridges linking two continents — one of the most relaxing and photogenic hours of the entire journey.

Galata Tower & Golden Horn
A 14th-century Genoese watchtower with a 360-degree platform over the Golden Horn — the natural harbor that made Istanbul one of history's great trading ports.

Balat & Fener
Istanbul's historic Jewish and Greek Orthodox quarters, now known for candy-colored houses, the Bulgarian Iron Church, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate — a quieter, deeply photogenic contrast to Sultanahmet.
A short domestic flight takes you from Istanbul to central Anatolia's volcanic moonscape, a UNESCO World Heritage region unlike anywhere else in Turkey.

Göreme Open-Air Museum
A cluster of rock-cut Byzantine monasteries and churches dating to the 10th–12th centuries, many still holding faded frescoes of biblical scenes carved directly into volcanic tuff.

Derinkuyu Underground City
An eight-level underground city carved to shelter thousands of people, complete with ventilation shafts, stables, chapels and wineries — built as a refuge during centuries of invasion.
An early start rewards you with one of travel's most iconic sights, followed by an easier day exploring Cappadocia's valleys on foot.

Hot Air Balloon Flight
Hundreds of balloons rise together over the fairy chimneys at dawn — weather permitting, this is consistently rated the single most memorable moment of a Cappadocia visit. Booked as an optional add-on with licensed operators.

Uçhisar Castle
The highest point in Cappadocia, a natural rock fortress riddled with hand-carved rooms and tunnels, offering sweeping views across the entire valley system.

Pigeon Valley & Fairy Chimneys
Named for the thousands of dovecotes carved into the cliffs by farmers seeking natural fertilizer, this valley is one of the most photographed fairy-chimney landscapes in the region.
A short flight brings you to the Aegean coast for a full day inside one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean.

Ephesus Ancient City
Once a Roman port city of 250,000 people, Ephesus preserves its Library of Celsus, the 25,000-seat Great Theatre where St. Paul is said to have preached, and marble streets still bearing chariot-wheel grooves.

House of the Virgin Mary
A small stone chapel in the hills above Ephesus, believed by many Christian and Muslim pilgrims alike to be where the Virgin Mary spent her final years, visited by several popes.
Depending on your onward flight, a private transfer takes you to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport or, with an added connecting flight, back to Istanbul for your international departure. Extensions to Pamukkale, Bursa or the Gallipoli battlefields can be added here on request.

Smart Recommendations for Your Turkey Journey
Based on thousands of past itineraries, here is how we would tailor this journey to different types of travelers — use these as a starting point when you request your custom quote.
Honeymooners
Add a private sunset Bosphorus dinner cruise and upgrade to a cave-suite hotel in Cappadocia with a private balloon-viewing terrace.
Families
We recommend adding a rest afternoon after Topkapı Palace and swapping the underground city visit for the more open, family-friendly Ihlara Valley walk.
Photographers
Request the Balat & Fener walk at golden hour and add a second Cappadocia sunrise slot in case of a weathered-out balloon day.
Combine with Pamukkale: Travelers with 10+ days often add 2 nights in Pamukkale after Ephesus for the terraced thermal pools of Hierapolis.
Best months: April–June and September–November offer the best balance of mild weather and stable balloon-flight conditions.
Private vs. group: Choose private if your schedule needs flexibility; choose small group for a lower per-person rate with a similarly paced group.
