Land in Adıyaman and spend the day on the Commagene trail: Karakuş Tumulus, the Cendere Roman Bridge, the Kahta castles and the summit statues of Mount Nemrut, then drive on to Şanlıurfa.
Discover the Hidden Gems of Southeastern Turkey in 3 Days
This 3-day Mesopotamia tour from Istanbul covers Mount Nemrut, Şanlıurfa, Harran and Mardin in two nights, a region where history, faith and landscape converge far from Turkey's more familiar tourist routes. Two domestic flights do the long-distance work, so your time goes on the sites rather than on the road.
The word Mesopotamia means "the land between the rivers", the fertile plains of the Tigris and the Euphrates where some of the world's earliest settlements, temples and cities appeared. The upper reaches of that landscape lie in Southeastern Turkey, and this Southeastern Turkey tour package is designed to show you the best of it in a compact, well-paced program with a licensed English-speaking guide.
What this Mesopotamia tour covers
The route traces the ancient kingdom of Commagene up to the summit of Mount Nemrut, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its colossal stone heads, and continues to Şanlıurfa, the "city of prophets", for Göbekli Tepe, the world's oldest known temple complex and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You walk among the beehive-shaped mudbrick houses of Harran, see the sacred carp of the Pool of Abraham (Balıklıgöl), and finish in Mardin, a hillside city of honey-colored stone that overlooks the Mesopotamian plain, with its monasteries, madrasahs, mosques and arcaded bazaars.
Why fly from Istanbul?
Southeastern Turkey is a long way from the Bosphorus by road. By flying from Istanbul to Adıyaman and returning from Mardin, this Istanbul to Mesopotamia tour fits Nemrut, Göbekli Tepe, Harran and Mardin into three days instead of a week. Both flights, all airport transfers, tolls, parking and fuel are included, so there is nothing to arrange on the ground.
Package tour, private tour or small group
The price includes two nights of bed and breakfast in Şanlıurfa at the 3, 4 or 5-star hotel category of your choice, two breakfasts, three local restaurant lunches, all entrance fees and a guide licensed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Private departures are available for couples, families and small groups who want their own pace, which makes this one of the most flexible Turkey cultural tour packages for history lovers.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for Southeastern Turkey, because summers can be very hot in Şanlıurfa and Mardin. Mount Nemrut is typically visited from spring to autumn, and evenings at the summit are cool in any season, so bring a warm layer.
Along the way you will pass Roman engineering, a settlement said to have hosted an early Islamic university, sacred pools tied to the story of Abraham, and monasteries that have stood since the earliest centuries of Christianity in the region. It is a trip built for travelers who want archaeology, faith history and authentic local culture in equal measure, at a pace that leaves room to look around rather than just tick sites off a list.
Who this tour is for
Culturally curious travelers, history enthusiasts and adventurous explorers who want a deeper connection with Turkey's ancient lands. It particularly suits couples and small groups looking for archaeological wonders, religious heritage and traditional local life rather than a beach-and-bazaar itinerary.
Only minimal physical fitness is required, though a genuine love of walking and discovery goes a long way. Private departures are available if you prefer your own pace.

Three Days, Three Cities, One Seamless Journey
Fly out of Istanbul to Adıyaman, base yourself in Şanlıurfa and finish in Mardin before flying home the same evening.
The archaeology day: the Atatürk Dam viewpoint, Harran's beehive houses, Göbekli Tepe and the Pool of Abraham, with both hotel nights in Şanlıurfa.
A full day in the golden-stone old city: Dayrulzafaran Monastery, the Kasımiye Madrasah, the museum, the bazaar and Assyrian wine, then the evening flight back.
3-Day Mesopotamia Itinerary: Mount Nemrut, Göbekli Tepe, Harran & Mardin
If you are comparing Southeastern Turkey itineraries, the order of the stops matters as much as the sights themselves. This 3-day Mesopotamia tour itinerary is built so that every full day visits at least four places, with the flights placed at the start and end so that no day is lost to long drives. The result is a complete Mount Nemrut, Göbekli Tepe and Mardin tour from Istanbul in just two nights.
Day 1 flies you to Adıyaman and spends the whole day on the Mount Nemrut tour: the Karakuş Tumulus, the Cendere Roman Bridge, the Arsameia (Old Kahta) and New Kahta castles, and finally the summit of Mount Nemrut with its colossal statues of gods, eagles and lions. You then drive to Şanlıurfa for the first overnight.
Day 2 is the archaeology day. After a viewpoint over the Atatürk Dam you explore the beehive houses of Harran, take a guided walk through Göbekli Tepe, the world's oldest known temple, and end at the Pool of Abraham in Şanlıurfa, where the sacred carp swim beside historic mosques and gardens.
Day 3 is a full-day Mardin tour: Dayrulzafaran Monastery, the old city and the Kasımiye Madrasah, an Assyrian wine tasting at lunch, the Mardin Archaeological Museum, and the Ulu Mosque and arcaded bazaar, before the flight back to Istanbul that evening.

Mount Nemrut: Where Kings Built Mountains of Stone
In the first century BC, King Antiochus I of Commagene had a tomb-sanctuary built on a summit more than 2,100 metres above the plain, guarded by colossal statues of himself, gods, eagles and lions. Centuries of weather have toppled the heads from their bodies, and today they rest in rows on the terraces, staring out across the Taurus Mountains.
The road to the summit is a journey through the Commagene kingdom, passing a royal burial mound, a Roman bridge that still carries traffic and the ruins of a hilltop capital. Mount Nemrut has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is among the most memorable places you can visit in Southeastern Turkey.
The "Black Bird Mound" is an ancient burial mound from the Commagene Kingdom, marked by standing stone columns. It is a good introduction to the kingdom and its rulers.
One of the oldest Roman bridges still in use anywhere in the world, built in the late 2nd century AD and easy to photograph from both banks.
Arsameia was a hilltop settlement of the Commagene kings, with carved reliefs and rock-cut features, while New Kahta Castle gives panoramic views over the valley.
Colossal statues of gods, eagles and lions flank the tomb-sanctuary of King Antiochus I, and one relief is believed to depict the earliest known handshake in recorded history.
Insider tip: the summit is much cooler than the valley, especially around sunset. Bring a warm layer and wear shoes with good grip for the final stretch on foot.
Şanlıurfa: The City of Prophets and the World's Oldest Temple
Şanlıurfa, also known simply as Urfa, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the region and is closely tied to the story of the Prophet Abraham. The old town of stone alleys, courtyards, mosques and bazaars is the heart of a landscape that also contains Harran and Göbekli Tepe.
Göbekli Tepe, dated to more than 12,000 years ago, rewrote the story of early human societies: its carved T-shaped pillars were raised before farming or pottery are thought to have appeared. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018 and is still being excavated, which makes a guided visit especially valuable.
The day begins at a viewpoint over the Atatürk Dam on the Euphrates, a reminder of how much the great river still shapes life in Mesopotamia today.
One of the longest continuously inhabited settlements on earth and, by tradition, the home of the Prophet Abraham, known for beehive-shaped mudbrick houses and what is said to have been the first Islamic university.
The world's oldest known temple complex predates Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids by millennia. A guided walkthrough explains the circular enclosures and the carved pillars.
Sacred to both Muslims and Christians as the spot where, according to tradition, Abraham was thrown into a fire and the fire turned to water. Sacred carp fill the pool, set in tranquil gardens.
Insider tip: Göbekli Tepe is exposed and has little shade, so bring sun protection and water, and expect the guide to explain what is currently understood about the site rather than a finished picture.
Mardin: Golden Stone Above the Mesopotamian Plain
Mardin climbs a rocky hillside above the Mesopotamian plain, its honey-colored stone houses stacked in terraces beneath a ruined citadel. Churches, monasteries, mosques and madrasahs stand within a few streets of one another, a reminder that Muslims, Assyrian Christians and other communities have shared the city for centuries.
The final day of the tour is spent entirely here: a monastery, a medieval madrasah, a museum, a local lunch with Assyrian wine, and the vaulted stone bazaar streets, before the flight back to Istanbul.
Also known as the Old Assyrian Monastery, one of the region's most significant religious sites. Its name is often translated as the Saffron Monastery.
A historic Muslim theological school, visited alongside the Şeyh Çabuk Mosque, the Latifiye Mosque and the Assyrian Mor Behnam Church.
Deepens the picture of the region's long history, followed by a stop to try traditional Mardin nuts and desserts.
Mardin's distinctive vaulted stone streets, with traditional crafts and the Ulu and Şehidiye mosques that grew up around the market.
Insider tip: Mardin's streets are steep and stepped, so comfortable shoes matter more here than anywhere else on the route. Modest dress is appreciated at the monasteries and mosques.
