Hotel Pick-Up

Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby (pick-up time may vary slightly by hotel location) for a short transfer into the historic peninsula.

Stop 1

Roman Hippodrome of Constantinople

Once the social, political and sporting heart of the Byzantine capital, the Hippodrome hosted chariot races, imperial ceremony and public gatherings for centuries. Highlights along Sultanahmet Square include:

  • Egyptian Obelisk — created for Pharaoh Thutmose III in the 15th century BC, brought to Constantinople by Emperor Theodosius I.
  • Serpent Column — a 5th-century BC bronze column commemorating the Greek victory over Persia, brought from Delphi by Constantine the Great.
  • Walled Obelisk — a Byzantine-era monument once decorated with gilded bronze plates.
  • German Fountain — a neo-Byzantine fountain gifted by Kaiser Wilhelm II to Sultan Abdülhamid II.
Stop 2

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

Built between 1609 and 1617 for Sultan Ahmed I, the Blue Mosque is a masterpiece of classical Ottoman architecture — six minarets, cascading domes and more than 20,000 handmade İznik tiles that bathe the interior in shades of blue. It remains an active place of worship.

Dress code: shoulders and knees covered; headscarves for women available at the entrance. Shoes must be removed before entering.

Stop 3

Hagia Sophia

Built between 532 and 537 AD by Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years — its dome, Byzantine mosaics and Ottoman calligraphy medallions sit side by side as living evidence of the city's layered history.

Highlights inside: the 31-metre central dome · Byzantine golden mosaics · Ottoman calligraphy medallions · the Deesis mosaic in the upper gallery.

Stop 4

Divan Yolu — The Imperial Road

Walk the ceremonial avenue that connected Constantinople's and Ottoman Istanbul's most important institutions for over a thousand years. Along the way:

  • Million Stone — the point from which all distances across the Byzantine Empire were measured.
  • Column of Constantine (Çemberlitaş) — raised in the 4th century AD to mark Constantinople as the new capital of the Roman Empire.
  • Tomb of Sultan Mahmud II — an elegant Ottoman mausoleum.
  • Çorlulu Ali Paşa Madrasa — a peaceful Ottoman educational complex.
  • Basilica Cistern (optional) — an underground Byzantine reservoir with 336 marble columns and Medusa-head bases. Entrance ticket not included but can be arranged.
Midday

Lunch Break (Own Expense)

A relaxed stop near the bazaar district — your guide recommends excellent local restaurants. Meals and drinks are not included, giving you the freedom to choose what and how much you'd like.

Stop 5

Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

The day concludes at the legendary Grand Bazaar — over 4,000 shops across 61 covered streets, established shortly after the 1455 Ottoman conquest and still the commercial heart of the Old City.

Shopping highlights: hand-knotted carpets · handmade ceramics & tiles · gold and silver jewellery · leather goods · spices & Turkish delight · Ottoman-style lamps.

Optional

Topkapi Palace

Extend your day with a visit to Topkapi Palace, residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years — imperial courtyards, the Harem, the treasury and sweeping Bosphorus views. Entrance fee not included in the standard price; request this upgrade when booking.

~05:00 PM

Your driver returns you to your Istanbul hotel to close out the day.

This was the best guided tour I have ever taken — and I travel a lot. Our guide's knowledge of Byzantine and Ottoman history was extraordinary. Standing inside Hagia Sophia hearing its 1,500-year story told by someone who clearly loves it was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

We had two days in Istanbul and chose this tour for our first day — the perfect decision. The guide was professional, punctual, and brilliant at explaining how Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations built on top of each other in the same square kilometre.

We were a family of five visiting Istanbul for the first time. Hotel pick-up was seamless, the guide was incredibly patient with our children, and every site was unforgettable. Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar were highlights for all of us.

Why Choose the Istanbul Byzantine & Ottoman Heritage Tour?

Istanbul is one of the world's few cities to have served as capital of three successive empires — Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. This tour is built to give every visitor a contextualised experience of that layered legacy in a single, well-paced day.

Hagia Sophia — A Monument Unlike Any Other

Built by Justinian I between 532 and 537 AD, Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral on earth for nearly a thousand years. After the 1453 Ottoman conquest, Sultan Mehmed II converted it into a mosque, adding minarets and calligraphy while largely preserving the Byzantine mosaics beneath — a unique superimposition of Christian and Islamic art.

The Blue Mosque — an Ottoman Answer to Byzantine Grandeur

Sultan Ahmed I built the Blue Mosque between 1609 and 1617 directly across from Hagia Sophia, an Ottoman architectural statement of equal ambition. Its six minarets and cascading domes create one of the world's most recognisable skylines.

Private vs. Group: Which Option Fits Your Trip?

The Group tour is a budget-friendly way to join this route with other travellers. The Private option dedicates the guide and vehicle to your party alone — worth considering for families, travellers with mobility needs, or anyone who prefers a flexible pace through Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
